JAMS Weekly Update
September 15, 2024
Dear JAMS Families/Estimadas Familias de JAMS
As we enter the month of September, we are excited to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15th to October 15th. This is a special time for us to recognize and honor the rich cultural contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to our community, state, and nation.
At John Adams Middle School, we believe in fostering an inclusive environment that reflects the diversity of our student body. Throughout this month, our students will have opportunities to engage in various activities and lessons that highlight the history, achievements, and influence of Hispanic and Latino cultures. Our goal is to educate and inspire all of our students to appreciate and embrace diversity, both inside and outside the classroom.
We are now entering the 4th week of the 6-week grading period, which ends on Friday, October 4th. This is a great time to sit down with your child to review their progress in Google Classroom and Aeries. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to your child’s teachers. Teacher email addresses can be found on the school website.
The last day to cast your vote for School Site Council is Wednesday, September 18th. The first school site council meeting is on Thursday, September 26th.
Have a great week,
Martha Chacón
Principal

September is Attendance Awareness Month
DID YOU KNOW?
- Students should miss no more than 9 days of school each year to stay engaged, successful and on track to graduation.
- Frequent absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with a bully or facing some other difficulty.
- By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
- By 9th grade, attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
- Missing 10%, or 2 days a month, over the course of the school year, can affect a student’s academic success.

Free and Reduced Meal Application
I am asking all parents to please complete the Free and Reduced Meals application by Friday, October 4. While California provides free meals to all students, this application is critical for securing eligibility for additional programs and resources, such as Title 1 funding for the 2025-26 school year. The state uses this form to determine which families qualify for benefits beyond free meals, and widespread participation is key. As a Title I school, John Adams Middle School depends on these funds to offer enrichment programs, interventions, and essential staff support for our students. Your cooperation in completing the application is greatly appreciated. Free/Reduced Meal Application.
Cell Phone Policy: "Away for the Day"
At John Adams Middle School, we have an "Away for the Day" policy regarding cell phones. All students are required to turn off their phones and keep them in their backpacks throughout the school day. This helps minimize distractions and keeps students focused on learning.
If you need to get in touch with your child during school hours, please call the main office, and we will relay the message to them. Similarly, if your child isn't feeling well, they should go directly to the nurse's office. The nurse will assess the situation and, if needed, will contact you directly.
Thank you for supporting our efforts to provide your child with a cellphone-free school experience!
